Why Does The Tour Count Matter So Much?

Because more operators competing means more departure times, more formats and keener prices. In Levi you are choosing from five listings; in Rovaniemi from eighteen, including the most-reviewed activity in Finnish Lapland.

The review counts tell the same story. Rovaniemi's flagship snowmobile safari carries 2,278 GetYourGuide reviews and its leading husky safari 1,568. Levi's best-reviewed husky safari here sits at 502 and its aurora tour at 189. Those are not bad numbers, and they are an order of magnitude smaller.

Both sit inside the same season, which Visit Finland puts at roughly November to May for reliable Lapland snow. Fewer reviews is not a quality warning. It is simply less information to go on before you commit, and fewer alternatives if your first choice is sold out on your date.

When Is Levi Actually The Better Choice?

When someone in your group wants to ski. Levi offers a larger ski-resort experience than Rovaniemi’s small local hill, and it solves a real problem for mixed groups.

Ski in the morning, husky safari in the afternoon, no long transfer between them. If your party splits between skiers and non-skiers, that convenience is worth more than a wider activity list.

The second case is darkness. Levi sits about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle with less light pollution than a city, so aurora conditions are somewhat better on your doorstep. Somewhat, not transformatively. The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the aurora at roughly half of dark, cloudless nights across Lapland's ski resorts generally, and Rovaniemi's tours exist precisely to drive you out of the city light. Rovaniemi has four direct UK routes for the 2026/27 winter. Levi is served by Kittilä, which has fewer, though easyJet is adding new UK services to both airports.

Can You Do Both?

Yes, over a week, and it works well. What it costs you is a transfer, and Lapland distances are longer than the map suggests.

A sensible split is a few nights in Rovaniemi for the village and the widest activity choice, then north to Levi for skiing and darker skies. Under five nights it is not worth the moving time, and you would be better off picking one and going deeper.

Huskies and aurora, and very little else on this site. Levi's five listings cover two categories where Rovaniemi covers six, and that concentration is the practical meaning of the tour-count gap.

Two things stand out. The 7 km husky safari is the longest sled run listed anywhere on this site, Rovaniemi included, so Levi genuinely wins on that one measure. And the aurora minivan listing states that the operator will not cancel based on weather, which is a real planning constraint rather than a complaint.

What is missing matters as much. There is no Santa Claus Village near Levi, no reindeer listing here, and no multi-day package. A family whose trip is built around Santa is describing Rovaniemi whether they realise it or not.

What Does Splitting The Trip Actually Cost You?

Most of a day, and more if the weather is poor. Rovaniemi and Levi are far enough apart that moving between them consumes travel time you were planning to spend on activities, which is why the split only pays above about five nights.

The question people ask is which town is nicer. The question that decides it is whether anybody in the group wants to ski. If yes, Levi, and the activity choice is a fair price to pay. If no, Rovaniemi almost always wins on choice, flights and the village.

Her second point concerns darkness, which is the argument most often made for Levi and is usually overstated. Which lapland resort is best?

For a first trip, Rovaniemi, because it has the airport, Santa Claus Village and eighteen of the twenty-four tours listed here. Levi is better if you want to ski as well, and Saariselkä if darker aurora skies matter more than choice.

Is Levi worth it if I do not ski?

Probably not on its own. Without skiing, Levi is a smaller activity market with no Santa Claus Village and a harder flight. Its case rests on the slopes and on somewhat darker skies.

Does Levi have Santa Claus Village?

No. Santa Claus Village is in Rovaniemi, about 8 km from the city centre, and it is free to enter. If seeing Santa is a fixed requirement of the trip, that settles the base question.

Are the tours cheaper in one or the other?

Rovaniemi tends to be keener because more operators compete there. Prices in both run in the same broad band, roughly €89 to €125 per person for the main activities, and each listing shows its live price for your date.

Which has better northern lights?

Levi is darker, which helps marginally. What helps far more is booking three nights rather than one, since the aurora appears on roughly half of dark, cloudless nights wherever you are. Rovaniemi's tours drive out of the city light to compensate.
